And what happens if your application crashes before resetting the system wide setting? What if your app forgets to reset it because of an application bug? What happens when your users start complaining about visual tearing in the system ?

This private setting is systemwide and affects all beam sync operations in the system. Please do not do this. This is an abuse of the system and it's resources. There are very likely better ways to accomplish what you are trying than to resort to this. Unfortunately I joined in the middle so I don't have the full context of your problem.

I certainly don't advocate using the hack that I described. Lorenzo asked how to disable beam sync via software, and I obliged with an example. I wouldn't ever ship an app with sync disabled, nor one which tweaked a system-wide property without the user's consent; it was only for debugging purposes. ;)

What would have been much more useful for us is to have an API to selectively enable beam syncing for various flavors of environment and/or surface: CF, CG, NS, gl, etc.
