CoreImage Transition performance

I'm trying to do a fancy fullscreen transition (something like the intro to Front Row) but the performance of the CoreImage transitions is terrible on my PB - I max out at 20 fps - definitely not fluid. Here's my computer stats:

  Machine Name:	PowerBook G4 17"
  Machine Model:	PowerBook5,7
  CPU Type:	PowerPC G4 (1.2)
  Number Of CPUs:	1
  CPU Speed:	1.67 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU):	512 KB
  Memory:	2 GB
  Bus Speed:	167 MHz
 ATI Mobility Radeon 9700:

The CoreImage context has been told to always use the GPU.

I've tried running some simulations in Quartz Composer - with full screen sized images - and the performance there is bad too - 20 fps when full screen. Even something as simple as the Dissolve seems to make it sweat - I thought the GPU would eat that for breakfast.

Is there a trick to getting decent performance with these transitions?

Thanks,

Robert.
