I've looked at Core Image Fun House, but it's still not clear to me.

What is the "original spectrum"? Is it the hue component from 0 to 1 after converting RGB to HSB?

Check out the Core Image Fun House sample app. You can give the filter a test run there. The inputGradientImage is a 1 pixel high gradient that maps the colors from the original spectrum to what you specify in that image.
