My MacBook pro has recently developed an annoying habit of
completely shutting itself off with no
warning at all when running my latest Quartz Composer compositions
on a second display.
There is no kernel panic, no messages in the log file, no crash
dump. The screen goes black and
then it powers down and instantly restarts.
this only seems to happen when running qc on a second display and
when I run the same qc patch
on an imac g5 it happily runs for hours with no crash or shutdown.
I suspected a hardware fault (RAM?) but the full diagnostics from
the mac os x dvd return no faults at all....
so my latest theory is that driving the graphics card so hard on
the macbook pro on both displays
is causing it to overheat and shutdown....
I'd be very interested to hear any suggestions for how to diagnose
this, as there is no log files or crash dump
its a bit hard to know where to start....
Are you running on battery of power? I have one of the first MBP and
I had to get the battery replaced because it was affected by that
issue where the machine just turns off suddenly while there's a still
a lot of charge in the battery.
