handling cpu/memory in slideshow x 144

I have a library of about 1200 images that I want to display in a grid of 144 images at a time and I am running into some predictable problems.

Here's what I need to do: each rectangle on the grid will initially be loaded with a random image from the library and a random timeout value, then on timeout will transition to another random image and load another random timeout value.

I can obviously modify the slideshow screensaver, which I have started to work with, but my initial experiments with trying to scale to 32 images produced a noticeable slowdown, and was occupying 70% of the cpu according to activity monitor.

Does anyone have any general ideas about how to structure this presentation to avoid sucking up huge amounts of processor and cpu time? The machine doing the presenting will not have to run anything else, but it will be running for several hours at a time in an art gallery for six weeks without tinkering, so reliability is a concern.

144 is an outside number, it could be a slightly smaller grid, but not by much.
