it took me more than a week to realize what's going on here:

Prior to 10.4.7 "Image with Movie" patches would correctly render
external Quartz compositions, but after upgrading I get this nasty
message in the console:
*** Message from <QCQuickTimePlayer = 0x0D48E0B0
"QuickTimePlayer_1">:
Movie at path "/Fish.qtz" contain Quartz Composer tracks
It looks like Quartz is explicitly checking to see if the movie
contains a Quartz composition.
Why is playback of Quartz compositions now prohibited?
Is there another was to play a Quartz composition within another
(without copying the contents into the composition)?

We had to disable this as we had no other way to prevent the
composition to self-reference itself through Movie patch and crash.
I want this feature back, too!
I am over 18 Years old,
I usually decide for my own, which risk I am going to accept.
Tell me how to reactivate the old behavior, that namely is
'Quartz Composer loads .qtz Movies within 'Image with Movie' patches
and sprite/billboards
play the movies' on Mac OS X 10.4.7 and up.
If you decide to put it out, disable it.
If I decide to put it back into QC, I want to be able to do so. That
makes a world of freedom to me.
For now it feels to me:
You took the engine out of my car, because cars can be harmful to me
and others.
But Apple didn't inform me as the car owner, that they are going to
do so, no.
Driving by for inspection, I got my car back without it's engine.
