You may also be able to use Yahoo Pipes to reformat your XML data source as RSS.

Our version goes a bit further in that it also writes to a file on the server, as well as returns the rss data how we need it. It really just depends on the format of the xml, and how much control you have over that data when it's created. If you can work with the creator of the data, it may be possible they can make a couple of changes that would help your cause. It wasn't the case for us, but you never know.

I was able to do this by using the RSS Parser, made available by enabling 'Private Patches':
