No, no, I just meant that one of the goals for the first version was to be able to take a composition and ask it to render a frame at an arbitrary time as that simplifies support in QuickTime. But it's true you can always create compositions that are not deterministic if they download data from internet or depends on user input. So it comes down to defining conventions, I guess.
The general rule is that 10.x.x updates only have bug fixes and new features are reserved for 10.x versions. Furthermore, binary compatibility must be preserved, so yes, updating the API in a way that would break older compositions is not acceptable.
