Re: OT: Motion on new ibook

From what I gather, anything with a radeon graphics chip or better will do compositing in hardware. The question is how much texture thrashing and slowdown are you willing to bear.

QuartzComposer is a little different because it can get around the Quartz Extreme limitations by falling back to just-in-time compiled code on the CPU. Therefore your limits are really bounded by your patience. The exceptional lower limit is a G3 with a Rage 128 graphics chip, that just doesn't cut the graphics stew. My patience is already stressed by a radeon 9600 Pro OEM in my Dual G5 1.8ghz box. Blending tricks are fine, but blurs are brutal.

The new G4 iBooks kick ass. If you're buying new well those laptops are fantastic, I just recommend you get a 3rd party memory upgrade, and crank that puppy up to the max. (Apple really needs to get sane with their memory pricing.)

Good luck!
- Aaron.

Apple has this Motion checker on their web site. Download it and then run it, it will tell you if your machine supports Motion.

Ok thanks but that still doesn't help me.

I'm considering buying a new ibook to take on the road with me BUT...

I want to know if I can run quartz compositions with core image filters at a decent speed
on it.

AND second off topic thing.... if i can run motion on it....

so the program doesn't help me as I don't have one of these, yet, that I can test on...

sorry for the confusion
