I am seeing some unexpected behavior which I intend to log as a
bug. Before
doing so, I would like to ask if others are seeing the same and if
this is a
bug or my lack of understanding?
+ Connect a camera to the computer. (I used a Sony Sony DCR-TRV20
DV video
camera connected via FireWire).
+ Turn on the camera to the Record mode. (The TRV20 also offers a
Memory
Stick mode which works as well.)
+ Log out and back in to close all user applications.
+ Close all Finder windows.
+ Launch Quartz Composer.
+ Cancel the offer to open a new composition from template.
+ Select File->New to yield a blank composition.
+ Add a Clear Renderer.
+ Set the color of the Clear Renderer to light gray (this step is
probably
irrelevant, but I include it for completeness).
+ Add a Billboard Renderer.
+ Add a Video Input Generator.
+ Connect the output of the Video Input Generator to the Image
input of the
Billboard.
(The Billboard should now display video input from the camera. Note
that
there must be one and only one video input active. If another
application of
another quartz composition has opened video input, Quartz Composer
will log
failure to the console and this video input will return no image.)
+ Select File ->Export as QuickTime Movie...
+ Name the movie, then enter a duration.
+ After the duration, close the Viewer. (this step is required)
+ Switch to Finder and navigate to your new movie. Open it in
QuickTime
player.
You should see a QuickTime movie window with a gray background and
a colored
rectangle.
+ Click the Play button.
The rectangle changes to live input from the camera.
I also opened a new composition from a template, added a Sprite,
and a Video
Input Generator, which I connected to the Sprite. After confirming
video
input, I then exported the composition to a QuickTime Movie.
Again, the
sprite displayed live camera input while QuickTime Player plays the
movie.
The remaining components of the composition show in the QuickTime
movie as
they do in Quartz Composer.
On a related note, I placed my composition in '~/Library/ Screen
Savers' and
selected it in System Preferences. After closing System Preferences
and
Quartz Composer, I activated the screen saver composition and
confirmed live
camera input to the composition running as a screen saver. I then
downloaded
'Saver Lab 1.7.2' from http://dozingcat.com/. I opened my
composition in a
Saver Lab window and selected Control->Toggle QuickTime Recording.
After
toggling a second time, I quit Saver Lab and opened the resulting
movie. The
movie played historical video from my camera but with at least
double the
frame rate.
