I used the QC viewer (preview, default size) to measure this, which displays a "Rendering Load" and the "Frame rate". The frame rate in that viewer is fixed at 60 FPS until the load reaches ca. 95%, then apparently the FPS are halved and thereby the load also. So 2000 Sprites was the maximum, with which I was able to achieve 60 FPS.
