Lava lamp

Has anyone managed to get a lava lamp effect? I've been trying to use a Particle System, and, while the effect is reasonable, it's too fast. (For a good illustration of what can be done, see the excellent Foxfire at <http://home.comcast.net/~jeff.ulicny/software/ >. I haven't managed to get quite as good as this...)

I don't think slowing the particle system down would work, though (it seems to 'burn out').
