Image Importer vs Image With Movie

I see a difference in saturation and luminance in the resultant image between :-

1) Displaying a movie or image by connecting it directly to a Billboard. 2) Doing the same but adding a node like a Hue adjust in between.

If the image has an alpha layer then the first approach also seems to ignore the alpha layer.

Doing the same thing with an RGB tiff image inside an Image Importer there is no difference with or without various effect nodes and also the alpha is always used.

Any ideas as to why this is happening? It seems that the direct connection skips something...
