Can you clarify this? I understood Core Image supports floating point
rendering on the graphics card but what you're saying is that Quartz
Composer only supports 8 bit textures so we can't use this
capabililty.



Core Image internally computes everything in floating-point, whatever the precision of the inputs images.

However, when QC draws the final result of a CI filter chain either
to the screen (which is 8 bits anyway) or to a buffer for export
(e.g. NSImage), it is converted to 8 bits.


What if one uses QCRenderer to render to an existing OpenGL context allocated from a 64 bit or 128 bit float pixel format? From my preliminary testing, QC seems to render fine, but what's happening behind the scenes?
