Re: Finder stealing the camera

This may be out of scope for QC itself, but the people who care about it are probably here.

It might be useful to have a 'DV Control' system preference pane.  Much like the CDs & DVDs prefs.  Here you could control which apps have control of cameras, decks and other such things.  Like for DV cameras there could be "automatic" which would be default, you could pick an app which always has control, or have a list of apps who's order you could drag around.. their priority for having access would be dictated by this order.  Similar functionality for decks.

Because otherwise it seems like the best way to handle the below problem of the finder taking control of the camera is to quit the Finder (http://www.resexcellence.com/hack_html_01/08-13-01.shtml).  Or any other app that might want control of the camera.  It'd be a royal pain in the neck to only be able to run 1 DV capable app at a time.

I've been having a problem with Quartz Composer where sometimes it doesn't recognize the attached camera.  I finally figured out the problem and I thought I would pass it along.  If the Finder is in the multicolumn mode and you select a .qtz patch (so that it is highlighted), a preview is shown in the finder.  The problem is that if the quartz patch that is previewed includes video input, then the preview steals the camera from other applications.  So if you navigate to a patch file using the finder in the multicolumn mode and double click on it, quartz composer is unable to access the camera input because the Finder preview is using it.  To fix this, just switch the finder to a different view such that the preview isn't visible before opening the patch.
