Quartz Composer's rendering doesn't *seem* to be affected by this as
the compositions still play when the menu is down. It's just the act
of opening or closing a menu that there is a delay. Closing the menu
seems to cause it to pause for 1.6 seconds or something. However long
that fade out is.

Just a guess: the standard Carbon event loop makes sure to call
MoviesTask when a movie view is playing, and MoviesTask calls the QC
"codec" to give it time to render a task. The timer that Cocoa supplies
for QCView, however, doesn't get called while menus are down or widgets
are being flipped, so the composition pauses.
