thanks for that comp, you've just given me a much simpler way to show my problem...
your quartz works fine... until you try and use an image with alpha in each layer.

try this version, see that the blue square doesn't mask correctly against the green one.
if I change them to "read_only" then the masks are correct but the layer ordering is wrong.

so is there a solution to having correct depth ordering with correct alpha blending on each layer?
