Re: Examples of QC being used for Lobby (Foyer) TV type solutions?

Many thanks Dan for the response.

The application I'm looking at is for use in a church, where a Mac Mini running QC would drive screens in the lobby and meeting areas.

It would essentially be running a template slideshow that would show schedules; probably a ticker with announcements; and part of the template would hold video content that would be updated from time-to- time. I basically want the administration to be super-easy so a non- tech person could update the editable content, probably through a web interface.

My limited knowledge of QC suggests this is all very feasible. I guess I'm really looking for some visual examples of what others might have done to get some inspiration and get feedback from the stakeholders before I start building it. If anybody knows of any good sources of visual samples (the WWDC or Genius Bar ones would be a good start) as the online samples I can find are mostly VJ oriented.

Cheers, adam.

I worked on two applications that sound similar to what you have in mind. Thought I obviously can't send the files, I'd be happy to talk with you about dynamic signage in QC, and what I've done with it.

One system I worked on was for a conference. It played an animation showing the upcoming sessions and speakers. As sessions completed, the items in the animation would update accordingly in real time. Apple also uses QC on screens at WWDC for visualizing the upcoming schedule and providing a scrolling ticker of announcements.

The second job I did was for a music promoter. The screens were installed (driven by Mac minis) in bars and concert venues. The quartz composition pulled show schedules, the band's poster/album art, and the venue's logo from the web, and cycled through an eye- catching animation of the upcoming shows.

I've done a couple other ones as well, mostly non-interactive but I did do one interactive one. I definitely have more ideas for these than I have time to produce them.

Quartz Composer is a pretty powerful tool, and will be getting a lot more powerful with Leopard. So in most cases, you can do pretty much any kind of non-interactive visualization you want, right out of the box. Do you have something particular in mind that you are wondering if it is feasible in QC?

Hi,

I'm interested in possibly using QC for a Lobby TV type of scenario.

Are there any examples of it being used like this? I know there was some discussion a little while ago here about the Genius Bar screens being powered by QC in order to integrate the real-time "next customer" display. I guess I'm looking for more examples, not so much for validation (I'm pretty sure QC would be excellent in this role) but rather more for inspiration to understand what others may have done and what's possible.

Cheers, adam.
