experimenting with frame differencing, etc, to detect motion could be
useful as well, hth in some way.

The former... although I'd like it if this would work with any image.
What I really want, from an algorithmic standpoint, is to be able to
take any source image, delay it, filter it, and recombine it with
the existing image.
I figure that if I can reduce the alpha in the filter section, then
I could control the lifetime of the trails.
In the example of the ball, I might have a sprite generating the
image of the ball, and LFOs modulating the X and Y coordinates so
that it moves around on the screen.
