Editor -> Indicate unsafe patches. This usually happens when you're using a patch that is declared "unsafe". You can check Console.app for warnings if this is the case as well.

Movie/Composition players like QuickTime, Safari, and Keynote will not fully render compositions with unsafe patches in them.

Thank you for your response. It is not clear to me where "Editor -> Indicate unsafe patches" is found or shown. I checked the QC composition and the console log files but could find no indication of problems in either.
