The resize patch will just resize the image to the dimensions you set, so you would have to tell it the screen resolution for it to actually fill the screen. It's not automatic at all.

If you don't know what the rendering size is, use the rendering destination dimensions patch - it gives you the x/y sizes in pixels + quartz units, and also the aspect ratio. You can plug them into either a resize patch or directly into a billboard like I've done here. In fact, you can completely delete the resize patch, as it's not doing anything.
