You should not mix up UTIs and OSTypes/Extensions/etc.

OSTypes, file extensions, mime-types, etc. are "type tags". Type tags are the hints to find a file's type, they are not the type itself.

Content type UTI, on the other hand, IS the type.

LaunchServices is responsible to type a file by analyzing its tags. The real bug here is that LS is not very good when one tag designates two different types... especially if the tag is the file's extension.
