MP3 playback with Sound Manager ?

Is it possible to playback mp3 directly (format being kFullMPEGLay3Format or kMPEGLayer3Format, or similar), with the Sound Manager, such as through SndPlayDoubleBuffer or a compressed sound header and bufferCmd/callBackCmd method ?

I have access to the mp3 stream, but can not, and do not want to call SoundConverterGetInfo, and I'm under the impression that the decompression atom provided by SoundConverterGetInfo is required to use the SoundConverter API for mp3, so that rules out SoundConverter.
