I need something really simple: I need to know the framerate of my movie to
tell it to the user.

You might wonder why I ask this as it already seems to have been answered
quite a few times in the past, but I found none of the previous posts works
with MPEGs.

Try using nextTimeStep instead of nextTimeMediaSample. MPEG-1 content
appears in a movie as a single sample, but nextTimeStep should be able to
find the frames within (that's how the left and right arrow keys can work).

Are you *sure* this works, have you actually tried it? I've never gotten this to work with MPEG-1s, even with nextTimeStep. The left and right arrow keys in QuickTime Player don't work either, they seem to step through the movie in 1/25th second steps, regardless of the actual MPEG frame rate. I just tried it again and stepping through my test movie the frame changes approximately every third step.
