Last I checked this API existed, but did nothing useful for interesting formats (i.e., it could write WAV but not MP3 or AAC).

If there is an example that shows something different, I'd love to hear about it -- the AudioFile 'info' APIs *claim* they can read/write MP3 and AAC, but fail miserably when you try to do it (I'm quite likely doing something wrong, but I was unable to find any useful example code; that is, code that didn't just write WAV or AIFF).
