Re: QuickTime DRM?

doesn't Sorenson provide some version of their video codec that works with
"media keys"?

if you use that, then users will have to distribute a media file together
with the related key from which you can track down and prosecute legally the
one who broke the end user license agreement (EULA) terms for your media
files. You could have a server that encodes your video on the fly (or
superencodes [modify the pre-encoded video so that it takes less time to add
the media key info in it than doing it on the raw video] if some codec
supports such a thing) and then delivers it to the client together with
their media key (the key is for the user to add at QuickTime control panel
[bad thing with a QuickTime's media key is user has to add that manually -
if I'm not wrong on this - and not via some one-click process once they
bought it from your website]), once they read and accepted the EULA and did
they money transaction (credit card or whatever)

of course a hacker can always hack the player software to get the raw video
and audio after the decoding and once they grabbed that, reencode it and
distribute it so that no info to who did it exists any more. To cover such
cases, use watermarking (invisible) in the video and/or audio, that is hide
they key info in the raw data. For example, I remember some friend taking
part in some EU-funded project with ra.CTI (www.cti.gr) in Greece where they
were watermarking MP3 audio on the fly

do you have any URLs describing DRM features of Real and WMP or other
related info? Would be useful to start some discussion thread on that stuff
(how these compare to what QuickTime offers [or to what technology iTunes
itself is using when buying songs online], what is needed more etc.)

cheers,
George
