Importing MP3 with QTKit

I'm trying to open an MP3 file using QTKit, but I'm getting some strange results. Although the MP3's length is 45:41.94 according to QuickTime player (and iTunes), when I import it with QTKit (I've tried both movieWithFile and movieWithAttributes) I get a length of 50:14.08, and I get an extra track. The extra track's type is reported as "Base" by QuickTime Player; also the sound track is only 25 minutes long.

What's going on here?

The weird thing is that QuickTime Player seems to be having the same problem, but is correcting it. My computer is slow enough (500 MHz Powerbook G4) that I can actually watch the import in progress. QuickTime's "Movie Info" window initially reports a duration of 50:14.08 but when the movie finishes loading, it is suddenly corrected to 45:41.94. In fact, I can even open the Movie Properties window and see the Base track in there. The Sound Track grows in length as it is loaded and at the end the Base Track disappears. (I'm assuming QuickTime Player is using a delegate to do all this cool live updating; I'm not, but that shouldn't matter to the final result, right?)

I'm using QuickTime 7.0.3 with Mac OS 10.4.2. The file I'm using is a Science Friday podcast downloaded via iTunes (in particular it is 2005110411, but it seems to happen with all the SciFri podcasts). For other long MP3 files, something similar happens, although the overall duration of the file is correct; still, the Sound Track is short and the Base Track is in there.
