Re: 10bit RGB playback into Visual Context

A bit OT, though jFYI -
Actually there are now several commercial and
almost-commercial <g> LCD-based (and other tech)
displays that are capable of more higher color
bitdepths. Sunnybrook had an impressive, yet
very crude and tiny demo machine at a couple
of SIGGRAPHs ago, at the Emerging Technologies
section. They (now called Brightside) have
a new HDR display, which is pretty big (37"),
and IMHO pretty promising. It's capable of
16bpc RGB (..imho maybe subject to interpretation).
There are others in prototype stage, exhibited
at the last IBC, NAB and SIGGRAPH.
Of course, the supporting hw/sw to drive such
things reliably is a whole new can of worms. ;)

The DVI interface and all current lcd displays handle 8-bit RGB maximum.
However in my case I'm not displaying the data just processing it and I am reading 10bits back from OpenGL.
So I want to optimise getting 10bits into OpenGL from QT.

I don't have an answer, but I am working with something similar and I have a related question...

Can the standard apple displays even show 10-bit RGB color? Or are they limited to 8-bit RGB(24-bit)? For example, if
I have a 10-bit RGB OpenGL display, will the colors beyond 8-bit show up on a powerbook? A cinema display run by
a G5 desktop?
