While I am not Apple, I can say with a very high confidence that there is no official path or SDK to do so. As you said yourself, the web is full of non-official info though


and am wondering will apple's big legal guys come after me if I release something which lifts iPod music files?

That is a question I can not answer.

What I can tell you is that all information I have found so far requires the user to select the "Use iPod as Harddrive Option". It may be possible to get around this, but I doubt this is worth the trouble
