'eat ' vs. 'imdc'

This is very similar to the 'spit' vs 'imco' question.

I have been given a compression/decompression library that has been built in
the DirectShow model. I've worked the compressor part of the library into a
QuickTime exporter and now I'm going to work the decompressor part of the
library into an importer.

But I am trying to understand when to use a decompressor 'imdc' versus putting
the work in the importer only.

When specifically are 'imdc' components called:
... when requested by another component (my component) only?
... or other times?

In other words, what are the benefits/drawbacks of
1) writing just the importer (no decompressor)
2) writing both importer and decompressor
(I may not have access to all the data I need for the
    decompressor interface, however).

Thanks,
Jeff
