RE: No audio when using QT COM control to export iPod files

This is the QuickTime API's dirty little secret regarding AAC and AMR audio export, which you are most likely trying to do with your m4v export:

AMR and AAC are licensed codecs on the Windows platform. Don't fear - you can license the technologies and then Apple will give you some special file to enable them. Here's some info on it.

http://developer.apple.com/qa/qa2001/qa1347.html

What it doesn't tell you is that the AMR codec alone will cost $6,000 up front with minimum royalties of $10,000 per year. I imagine the AAC codec is similar in price.

This basically makes the Quicktime COM control useless for a lot of common modern formats, unless you are a business with a lot of money and can pay. Quicktime *Pro* is a licensed product, so you were fortunate enough to get this capability for $30, but not fortunate enough to use that feature in the COM object. Very frustrating...

Oh, and if you have a Mac, you can use the SDK and export to these format because the *OS* is licensed. Even more frustrating...

Subject: No audio when using QT COM control to export iPod files

I have a little movie exporter app that uses the QT COM control in
VB.NET. If I use the iPod type exporter (which has no options) to
export a QT movie file, the resulting m4v file has no audio.

All other export types export the movie with audio. The same file
export from QT Pro has audio so it seems to be COM control related.

I've tried exporting iPod clips using the sample applications/code that
come with the "Quicktime for .NET and COM Developers" book and the
resulting clips don't have audio either.

Can anyone else confirm this or offer suggestions?
