I think you are better off reading the QuickTime 7.1 documentation.

Basically picture aspect ratio is media dimensions ratio times pixel aspect ratio. But in classic aperture mode it is just the track (or movie) dimensions ratio. IOW in this case the picture aspect ratio of a single track movie is determined by media dimensions, track scaling and movie scaling as set in the matrices.
