My program composes images, and occasionally a user wants to import a CMYK image; I tried using a simplistic conversion from CMYK to RGB but it left the image really flat.  Can someone who has figured this out please share this secret?

You should be aware that CMYK <=> RGB conversions are implicitly lossy, so even if you get all the profiles correct you are only likely to see an approximation of the original image (although it may be a very good approximation).
