RE: Determining current input selection from menu bar

I have built my own text editor. Normally characters are entered left to right. But if for example the user selects Hebrew on the input menu, I may want to change the font, but for sure I want to change the direction of text insertion to right to left.

I have already tried the trick of looking at the unicode range of the the character being received as the user types in to determine the direction, but then space characters get typed and the direction suddenly reverts to right-to-left and kind of messes up the logic.

I don't understand why apple would add a system menu of such importance and then not expose an API to interrogate its value.
