Hi all,

I’ve been running some tests to see whether the Apple TV will / won’t support 5.1 audio in various formats. Results are here:

The big surprise for me is that the Apple TV – and also QuickTime 7.1.5 – seem to be doing some form of matrix encoding of the center channel from a 6-channel (5.1) AAC soundtrack such as those in Apple’s HD trailers, certainly in a way that a Dolby Pro Logic I amplifier can decode when received over Toslink. Is this a new feature in QuickTime 7.1.5? Whilst it’s not quite 5.1 audio over optical, and doesn’t seem to be quite Dolby Pro Logic I, it’s still a pleasant surprise. Has anyone else experienced this / can it be confirmed?
