Is there a more appropriate place (forum, etc.) to ask this question?
No, this is the right place.
If I understand your needs, you should look at wired sprites. A
sprite is a visual element in a particular kind of track (a sprite
track), and a wired sprite is a sprite that has had some logic
attached to it. Navigate on over to http://developer.apple.com/
samplecode/QuickTime/idxWiredMoviesandSprites-date.html and look at
the wired sprite-related samples. I think the qtwiredactions and
the qtwiredsprites samples are good places to start. If you want
some hand-holding on this code, check out the QuickTime Toolkit
books, which contain good descriptions of these topics.
Sidenote: On developer.apple.com, the buildt samples and resource
files of all samples on that page are broken (stripped resource fork).
The book companion CD (and the MacTech archives, there one might find
another copy) are the two places where the resources are intact.
