Furthermore, I just ran the *exact* same code you pasted with the *exact* same path. It does not work. bdNamErr.

**That** is the mystery.

I'm not really following this discussion but if the two of you are getting different results with the same code and same file name there are LOTS of possible reasons for this, eg.

a) you're using different file systems? HFS+ or something else?
b) you're using different versions of Mac OS X?
c) the file Today:Friday.txt already exists/doesn't exist/is/isn't readable/writable, does or doesn't contain a reference movie that has a data ref with a bad path, etc. etc.
d) the file system is/isn't case sensitive and you also have a file called today:friday.txt or TODAY:FRIDAY.TXT
e) you also have or don't have a file or directory called Today
etc.

Even if you're using an API that accepts a POSIX path it wouldn't surprise me if QuickTime converted it to an FSSpec or something internally, so it's very plausible that a difference which seems like it shouldn't make a difference *does* make a difference in practice. There are lots of things you can try to narrow down what exactly is triggering the error though.
