Brad,
The problem here is not about serial communications but about timing:
1. The Sony P2 protocol (called serial machine control via RS422) has to
be strongly tied to the video timing. That's why the video board
manufacturers include the machine control in their hardware and its
commands in the SDK API. It is not possible for an application to have a
correct sync with a deck without this help. This is needed if the
application has to be locked to picture (as audio workstations) as ours is.
2. Even forgetting about external machines, such an application still
needs to retrieve video timing information from the board. My second
question was: does QuickTime carry timing information while playing back
a video file? To be more concise: the application needs a [frame number
/ host time] pair, meaning that the given frame number is to be output
from the physical jack at a given host time. This is common in the video
board's APIs and needed to sync audio to video and to know what movie
frame to enqueue next.
Thank you,
Alejandro
