Stuttering playback

For some reason my QTKit based app (QT7.4.5 OSX 10.5.3) can't play back movies without stuttering.

The stuttering is also visible with Quicktime Player so it isn't our app that's causing the problem.

Have a look at the following movie (h264 encoded with Quicktime):

The stuttering is extremely visible with the horizontal scrolling text, the text sometimes seems to freeze (dropping frames?) and jump (catching up?)

I've tried (without success) a Mac-mini, iMac Core2Duo and a MacPro so this isn't a speed issue.

But now comes the kicker, the same movies play without stuttering on a an old P4 PC (Quicktime 7.4.5, XP)

any ideas?
