The problem has been resolved --- needed some additional retains for some aspects of the multithreading I am doing. The buffer pool does prevent recycling until the buffer has been released.
The QTPixelBufferVCToCGImage approach, with multithreaded overlap of some of what I'm doing, has produced speedups in the range of 2x to almost 5x vs GetMoviePict. So that's pretty gratifying.
