QTJ support - platforms & Flash

Greetings,

I'm current in the specifications phase of a new educational project. We want it to be web-enabled, so we're pitching a combination of Java applets and applications (delivered via JNLP).

We'd like to make these activities as visually rich as possible so I'm investigating the use of Flash content.

While the Java Media Frameworks seems to have begun supporting Flash (circa 1999), I don't see any support beyond Flash 2.

So my research has lead me to Quicktime. I've never messed with QuickTime on Windows, QuickTime for Java, or imbedding Flash in a QT movie. From this almost bottemless caldron of ignorance flow my questions:

(a) QuickTime, Flash, and Java are all supported on both Mac and Windows systems. But does the combination of QuickTime+Flash+Java work (well) on both platforms? I'm assuming they should, but I'd like to ask someone who's done it.

(b) What problems/limitations will I run into supporting Mac OS 9?

(c) The QuickTime developers page says that QTJ supports SWF 3.0 and 4.0 formats. I assume this doesn't include the new MX (5?) format. [ I did note that someone asked this question a couple of weeks ago, so I assume the answer is no. ] Opinions: Would being limited to the 4.0 format be a great hardship?

(d) Are Flash tracks inside a QuickTime movie fully interactive? That is, is there any great loss of Flash functionality because it is imbedded vs. running in the Flash player?

(e) What direct interaction can be acheived between Java and Flash? For instance, it is feasible to create animated Flash (or QuickTime) buttons/controls then have those do something on the Java side?
