Just done some more testing with the standard SondRecord program supplied by
apple.

When the settings dialog comes up and I select mono that's when all the
problems start occurring. I think it is doing what you are mentioning but
it's like QT is the problem rather than me. It's almost like it's allocating
enough space for stereo even though it's only recording in mono. Stereo
recording is fine..
