It sounds as if the file is referencing some external
resource on your machine that also needs to be copied? (and
FTP/HTTP expects a standalone file with no external
dependencies). If that was the case though, I'd expect Apple
File Sharing to copy any Mac-specific external stuff though
when you transfer a file to another machine.

When you say "cannot open it", what exact error does it
return?
