However, I think WinVDIG is free for non-commercial apps.
You may try that instead
Plus abstract plane's VDIG can be downloaded for trying
before buying it if I remember correctly (that's how I tried
it, haven't bought it yet since I don't do much capturing
yet)

it may have to do with VirtualDub supporting only camers
providing the older VfW driver (hoped they would have
started supporting cameras with WDM drivers by now)

This should mean it has a WDM driver and can use DirectShow
services etc. to do capturing. For QuickTime it needs a VDIG
(video digitizer) component to do capturing. Unfortunately
Apple doesn't provide a generic one that would use
DirectX/DirectShow, that's why I suggested WinVDIG or
Abstract Plane VDIG.

Else try JMF (Java Media Framework), they do provide some
support for capturing on Windows (IBM has provided the
needed plumping it I think, using parts of its HotMedia
technology). It should be a free download from java.sun.com

It will be more trouble to interface JMF capturing code with
QTJ, but it's surely possible since they're both Java and
QTJ provides for ways to create/draw into Java "Image"
objects or vice-versa to convert data from Java Image
objects to QTJ PICTs etc. in memory (that is without saving
first to disk from JMF and loading again from QTJ which is a
much easier option for briding JMF and QTJ if you don't mind
the extra time and temporary disk space to do this)
