Re: Compiling for Windows

On my Mac, I have xCode set to compile with 1.3 and it creates a package that
acts like an executable. This works fine on the Mac even though my system
is updated to 1.4.2 . I want to take the compiled code and run it on a
Windows system. Questions are:

Should I be able to create a .bat file that launches the .jar file?
If the Windows user has 1.4 or newer will my .jar file run as compiled for
1.3?
Has anyone repackaged .jar files from xCode with jSmooth successfully?
Anyone have tricks or methods of doing this to share?

Your user can double-click the .jar file and if they have a recent JVM installed it will run at the one the user installed later (usually that's the newest JVM, but not necesserily). Also there's a chance some archive-handling file will pick up the .jar file and open it to show its contents, though I don't know any such archiving program that will do it by default (in my system I usually set WinZip or similar to open .jar files - don't like them launched when double-clicked and prefer to see their contents instead [they are .zip files in fact])

there are some solutions arround for making Java app launchers, not sure if there's some free one though. I also have a commercial solution to the problem of detecting and selecting JVMs at app startup plus loading your .jar/.zips from a folder and its subfolders with no fear about classpath and environment variables size (and extra plus is that then you have an .exe to launch your app, can set a custom name and icon for it etc.). If you feel the pricing is not too much (see http://order.kagi.com/?9WA [the WCLSPATH+RUNJAVA item]), then send me a private e-mail for more details on how it works...
