Well, I can confirm the same thing. I just purchased one of the Pixar shorts and it does the same thing. Would be interesting to see if a C++ call to OpenMovieFile does the same thing.

Pretty much:

2005-10-13 16:53:51.889 QT7MiniDemo[770] ERR: NSError "an unknown error occurred" Domain=NSOSStatusErrorDomain Code=-2126 UserInfo={NSLocalizedDescription = "an unknown error occurred"; }
an unknown error occurred

See my blog on this:

I suspect Apple go to some lengths to ensure you can't open these files. I guess that while they were able to let you open and play DRM-protected audio files while preventing you from saving them they weren't able to do the same for video files and so the only way to protect them was by preventing you from opening them.

That's my guess too - maybe they thought we'd grab the GWorld and start encoding that into a new file.  Not that I'm in any hurry to re-encode something at so low a resolution, in violation of many laws (some of them actually legitimate and sensible), but someone probably would.

Thing is, QuickTime Player can play this stuff, so there's some process by which it can be done by non-iTunes applications.  We'll have to wait and see if that process is in the QuickTime API and whether it's ever revealed through legitimate channels.
