You only need to explicitly use this path if you're compiling as it's not picked up automatically by javac (because of the .zip extension I think).

it's how JAVAC works, it ignores system classpath etc. and you need to explicitly pass all libraries to it using the "cp" or similar parameter. That's for avoiding hard-to-debug errors where you may have compiled against some other copy of a library (from the classpath) than the one you thought you were using
