Was my hostility veiled? That wasn't my intention ;-) I'm glad you're positive, and I share your JMF pain. Yes, QTJ is pretty much the only game in town, but the reason I'm so cross is that the only game in town isn't good enough to ship anymore. It was, when I started using in 5 years ago it was solid and functional. Now it is creaky and suspect, which is a real shame, and I'm sad. I don't blame anyone in particular, just underinvestment by Apple, who needed Java developers when they started shipping OS X, and now don't. I'm the victim of a technical bait and switch. I'm sorry if this sounds unduly negative, but I've spent 58 hours so far this week chasing a memory leak which is holding up our release, and for which the only cure I've found blows up the VM randomly. Now I'm into my second day of waiting for Apple Developer Support to get back to me... On a positive note, and I've called for this before, if Apple were to open source QTJ, we'd have a lot to contribute. QT is a spectacular achievement and is still getting better. QTJ could be doing the same. Let's start that petition here. +1 vote : Duncan McGregor Original Message: ----------------- From: Alex Shaykevich While I have been guilty of bashing Apple on this subject myself, I don't think this kind of continued veiled hostility is going to yield positive results for anyone. Tom, thank you for posting these articles. It really whets our appetites and makes us all the more envious of those developers Apple seems to be catering to. Despite the complaints, QTJ remains far and away the most powerful multimedia tool available to Java developers. As someone who's spent more time in the nether regions of JMF than anyone should have to, I can tell you there is no comparing it and QTJ for multimedia creation. If anyone at Apple is listening, we're here, we're eager, and there are probably more of us than you think who are ready to craft killer apps using Apple technology. Perhaps it's time to start a petition...
