I was using a JComponent so I couldn't exactly use a
MovieController class, howver, I did try just about every
possible means of starting/stopping the movie using the APIs in the
Movie and MoviePlayer classes with the
exact same results no matter which API was used. It seems that
internally, start/stop effectively translates
to setRate.
I have worked around my immediate needs by switching to Java Media
Framework for this particular project but I would
like to see this issue fixed so that I may use QuickTime Java again
in the future without running into this problem again.

Just a thought, rather than calling Movie.setRate() have you tried
using a MovieController and calling play() instead?
