Re: What's broadband to you?

Here in Portugal, the scenario is equivalent to the Spain market (one former telco a de facto current one), with the diference that broadband is more or less limited to the de facto monomply cable operators [they had a granted monopoly based on geografical zones] with ADSL and SDSL services only recently introduced.

Prices are equivalent to Spain ones (mayhappen a bit cheaper, but not enought to compensate the diference in live style cost from Portugal/Spain, with vantage to Spain prices).

As for quality of service, there is good quality in the internal backbone (ie... sites hosted locally in Portugal and in ISP instalations have good bandwidth), but international bandwidth is sometimes a problem.

The cientific network, hosted to the benefit of the university and schools is indeed one of the slower in Europe (the geografic localization doesn't help at all)...

Cheers...

That said, I am curious what broadband means or implies elsewhere on
the planet in regards to the Internet.

In Spain, 256k ADSL (with 128k return IIRC) is pretty commonplace, physical copper pair available only from the former telco monopoly (and de facto current monopoly as well), with a dozen ISPs to choose. About 45 Eur/month depending on the chosen ISP (1 Euro = $1.02 yesterday), no traffic limits, including ADSL router renting, mailboxes, web space and other useless extras. 512k and 2Mbps available for somewhat higher cost.

Where MSOs / cable operators have an installed plant, their
service is usually somewhat cheaper, but actual terms depend a lot on each
operator. Here (Galicia, NW corner) basic cable broadband service is
300kbps data (with 150k return) without traffic limits, including cable
router, plus basic cable TV and phone service (analog) for 43 Eur/month
IIRC. Again, higher speeds available at somewhat higher cost.

While in my experience ISPs are not the most reliable thing one
can imagine, at least they are fast (ie., you do get close to your access'
theoretical limit).

Regards,

Miguel
